What to see in South Tyrol

The Iceman | Ötzi Museum in Bolzano
Over 5000 years ago, a man climbed up to the icy heights of the Schnalstal glacier and died. He was found by accident by a couple of German tourists in 1991, with his clothes and equipment, mummified and frozen: an archaeological sensation and a unique snapshot of a Copper Age man. For several years highly specialised research teams examined the mummy and the articles found with it. They have been on exhibit since March 1998 at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. www.iceman.it

One of the most splendid Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) buildings in the entire alpine region, the Kurhaus was formerly a casino and thermal resort for noble and discerning visitors of past times. Nowadays it is particularly appreciated for its wonderful acoustics and regularly hosts concerts and events of international resonance such as the famous classic festival "Settimane musicali meranesi" which takes place at the end of August.

Tyrol Castle
The Medieval Castle dominates Merano and the surrounding valleys and gives its name to the entire region of Tyrol. In the tower of the building houses a historical and cultural museum where visitors can get to know all secrets of South Tyrol's history and traditions. And what were a castle without the raptors? In the close vicinity of the Castle you will find a centre dedicated to these splendid birds, where wounded and ill animals find refuge and let free to fly for the joy of all visitors!

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle
The Castle will lead you into the garden of senses... On the hillside above Merano the former holiday residence of the Empress Sissi of Austria donates visitors some hours of tranquillity and harmony among flowers and plants original from all over the world. A relaxing and educative experience in close contact with nature. www.trauttmansdorff.it

This family run hotel deserves my excellent ratings! The owners make it a point to keep you happy. They always wear a smile on their face and so do thier personnel. The food is as excellent as the service.

The hotel inside is beautiful, the rooms are fantastic. The service is great, very friendly. The food both for breakfast and for dinner was simply delicious.
